And now for something completely different

I have been posting about Illinois' problems and frankly I am tired of the same old song. So with that how about I post some thoughts on some new songs, or rather new music releases I am enjoying. For the record, I have over 30,000 songs in I TUNES and Amazon Cloud, I own around 3000 plus CD's, over 300 albums-used to have over 12 record crates of albums. My tastes are simple-take a line from the British Invasion and draw it to my collection. Bands that I have loved that never were big in the states but still seem to stand the test of time include Be Bop Deluxe, Bill Nelson, the Strawbs, Nick Lowe, Steve Gibbons Band, and others. I have just picked up the following in the last few weeks-Randy Newman Live In London, Dave Davies Hidden treasures, and the Pink Floyd Discovery Box Set. Simple review-buy all four! Randy Newman CD with the live DVD is stunning. Randy is one of the great songwriters of our time, but his singing is an acquired taste, that said it includes a "orchestra" and is real recorded, well performed, with a broad range of his deep song book. Dave Davies-whom I have met, has finally released his "Lost" album, rare tracks, B Sides, etc-songs Kinks fan are familiar with but all remastered, as well as including 3 unreleased songs. This release is of course focused on when Dave was working on a solo career-when the Kinks were banned from the US and making music that IMHO was the equal or more of the Beatles. The remastering is stunning, actually fixed a problem with one song I found to have been screwed up on the UK Arthur release. Again highly recommended. Next-Pink Floyd--for me this was a Discovery. I have all the key Pink Floyd Releases that are the standards-I did not have their full catalogue. I bought it at Costco-for $149 and it is worth every cent. The remastering done is the equivilant of the Beatles EMI releases which is saying alot. I tend to get pissed off when I buy a "remastered release" and it sounds like the first two I bought-not true here. It sounds excellent. Buy this boxed set-it really gives the listener the full history of Pink Floyd-though I still don't know who Floyd was! I could go on for hours on all three of these releases but won't. I also have yet to listen to the Beach Boys Smile release, Stones Some Girls, and new John Wesley Harding-those will be next....I also will post reviews on other new releases which I thought would be great but are dissappointments-such as the new Coldplay....Mr Bill

You Get what you vote for

This week the latest line of Illinois politicians, in this case our governor, BLAGO, was sentenced for 14 years. Blagojevich reaped what he sowed, as did Illinois. This week the press mentioned the systemic abuses, incompetence, and trail he left within the first to last year of office. He apologized on the day of his sentence, when for the last three years he threw the whole process under the bus, with ridicule, sarcasm, and personal from what I could tell attacks on the Federal Prosecutors. All of this has been said. As Judge Zagel said the fabric of Illinois is torn, or as I have said, Ill is Ill. What continues to amaze me is that the voters of Illinois must also be Ill. The consistently vote for people who are products of a system which has hidden taxes across the board. I am not painting all Illinois politicians with a broad brush. The new President of Cook County, Ms. Preckwinkle is wrestling both legacy practices and a huge deficit in a truly stellar manner. I also am more than impressed with the new Mayor of Chicago-the Rahm man. He has inherited a complete mess. No more needs to be said on that. When he said this week that the taxpayers of Chicago are not an open ATM machine-I was impressed. What does not impress me is the voters in Chicago allowing themselves to be again-systemically taken for a ride. My point is there is some hope here in Illinois though with the current state politicians who 1) ignore our debt 2) want to make my bathroom a casino(that will be next years bill-all bathrooms are open to gambling) 3) our property taxes go up as commercial taxes go down---hmmm who represents the commercial properties?

In conclusion, Blago got what he deserved, appears there will be more fallout from this conviction. I take no joy in what happened to our Governor, in fact I have nothing but empathy for his family, apparently he just realized this week what his actions have done to them. God Save the Kinks and GOd Save Illinois....Mr Bill

King of 5% is a felon

This week was a major week in my favorite state, ILL, that means Illinois-which is sick or rather ILL. This week someone from what I have read in the local papers, heard discussed on the radio, et all, Mr Celleni was found guilty of 2 of 4 counts. He was per the local press the King of ILL, made so with help from what is known around here as the ILL combine. The secret to Ill politics, and yes our President is from Ill, is that if your are a politician, your party affiliation is pretty much dictated by where you live. Now why do I say that? Well our latest, recent felon lived in Springfield, was know as Mr 5%, which was his take on deals, such is why he was/is a high school teacher and is now worth a $100M....anyhow for all of you uneducated folks Mr Celleni, was tight with Tony Rezko, our President's neighbor......hmmmm...G'Night-Mr Bill

As Time Goes By

God Save the Illinois

Today I attended a wake for my sister in law's brother who not only was a good man but a much smarter man than me. He had worked and lived in Illinois for 55 years. He was an avid Bears fan, was someone you could always talk to, a good father, and all around a good man. Well he left here two years ago. Why would someone leave Illinois? I am not sure I have enough storage to tell you all the reasons. This past week the CEO of a major employer in ILL(28,000 employees) threatened to leave the state. Our recently elected Guv-said no, no, no-they will never leave! Well Guv-you are either in a coma, stupid, or have your head where it should not be able to be. My oldest daughter just moved to Texas--why? Well besides she can enjoy better weather-she gets a 5% increase in take home pay-no income tax in Texas vs 5% here, she pays half in sales tax-Cook County is the highest in the nation, and finally again-the weather! Illinois is imploding, the corrupt system here encourages it. I expect if and or when the state defaults the usual suspects will blame the banks....Mr Bill PS who else but ILL(that is the short definition and current status of Illinois---would plan to borrow over $8 Billion-and claim it lowers cost when they are $13B in debt--as Mr Spock would say-fascinating)
